Hawaii Police Arrest Man in Killings of Three Elderly Men

Jacob Daniel Baker, a 36-year-old man from Pahoa, Hawaii, was arrested Thursday after a massive manhunt on Hawaii's Big Island that followed the killings of three elderly men. Authorities described him as armed and extremely dangerous, according to multiple reports.

The victims were identified by police as Robert Shine, 69, found partially submerged in a cement pond; John Carse, 69, discovered about 19 miles away with sharp force trauma injuries; and an unidentified 79-year-old man found near the first victim's residence. Autopsies revealed that Shine was strangled and Carse died from sharp force trauma, as reported by CBS News.

The killings occurred over two days in a remote, rural area known for its tropical landscapes and barren lava fields. Police Chief Reed Mahuna stated they had no identified motive but were confident Baker was involved in all three homicides. The search involved significant resources from state and federal authorities, including the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service.

Baker's arrest came after a citizen tip led law enforcement to his location. Witnesses reported seeing a man resembling Baker hiding in a grassy area of a field before he fled to nearby land where officers found him in a small cave on Thursday afternoon, as reported by The Guardian. He was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, burglary, and theft among other offenses.

Residents expressed relief following Baker's arrest, with some describing their fear during the manhunt. Deborah Davis, a local resident, recounted seeing police chase and apprehend Baker near where one of the victims lived. The community in Puna, known for its affordable land but also lawlessness due to unpaved roads and makeshift homes, had been on edge.

Baker was previously known to authorities with 20 other cases in his court record over two decades, mostly traffic infractions. Two women had recently sought temporary restraining orders against him, alleging threats and harassment at a farm where he lived. A judge denied both applications due to insufficient evidence of harassment.

Jacob Baker has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder for the alleged triple homicide in a remote part of Hawaii's Big Island. He also faces multiple counts of burglary, criminal property damage, theft, and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Baker is being held without bond on the murder charges. Authorities previously said Shine's body was found partially submerged in a cement pond, just a few hundred feet from where they located the deceased 79-year-old man. Carse's body was found about 19 miles away, police said.

Baker was apprehended in Kalapana, about 10 miles from Pahoa. Police said they located him after receiving reports that video surveillance had captured footage of a man resembling the suspect, who was hiding in a vacant lot in that area. Witnesses also reported seeing the man 'repeatedly ducking down as passing traffic approached,' according to police.

Authorities ultimately found Baker hiding in a small cave on a property adjacent to the vacant lot, Hawaii Police Chief Reed Mahuna said at a news conference. The police chief did not share details about how Baker was identified as the suspect or what his motives for allegedly carrying out the killings may have been.
