Man Charged After Girl's Death at Scottish Industrial Estate

A 35-year-old man has been charged following the death of a nine-year-old girl, Minnie Merriman, who was found seriously injured at an industrial estate in Arbroath, Angus. According to multiple reports, the family had been camping nearby when the incident occurred just after midnight on Monday. The girl was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but later died.

Police Scotland confirmed that the death is being treated as suspicious, though they stated there was no wider risk to the public. The suspect and the victim were known to each other, and three other family members were also taken to hospital for treatment before being discharged. Residents of Arbroath expressed shock and sadness over the incident, with locals laying flowers and cuddly toys at the scene. Neighbors recalled seeing a family camping in the area earlier that evening. The industrial estate was cordoned off by police, with a green car removed from the scene on Tuesday afternoon per Sky News. Detective Inspector Mike Ness of Police Scotland’s major investigation team stated that an increased police presence would remain in the area while inquiries continue. West Yorkshire Police are supporting the investigation.

NHS Tayside is investigating an alleged data breach following claims that staff accessed Minnie Merriman's medical records, according to Sky News. A spokesperson for the health board said any data protection breach would be recorded and investigated by NHS Tayside and reported to the Information Commissioner's Office if appropriate.

Christopher Rice, 35, of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, was charged with Minnie Merriman's murder during a hearing at Forfar Sheriff Court on Wednesday. He did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody. Minnie's family paid tribute to her in a statement released through Police Scotland, expressing their devastation and requesting privacy.
