Canadian PM Carney Advocates for Middle-Power Cooperation Amid Global Instability

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the Australian Parliament, advocating for closer collaboration between middle powers like Canada and Australia amid global instability. Speaking in Canberra, Carney emphasized the need for these nations to work together in areas such as critical minerals, defense technologies, and artificial intelligence to counterbalance dominant superpowers.

Carney's speech echoed themes he had previously outlined at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he argued that the old norms of the rules-based international order were being erased. He stressed that middle powers must act with speed and purpose to shape global outcomes in an era where hegemons increasingly act without respect for international laws.

During a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Carney announced that Australia would join the G7 Critical Minerals Alliance, describing it as the largest grouping of trusted democratic mineral reserves in the world. Canada and Australia together produce significant portions of global lithium, uranium, and iron ore supplies.

The leaders also discussed the ongoing war in Iran, calling for a de-escalation but emphasizing that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons. Carney noted that while Canada supported efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear capabilities, the current conflict represented another example of the failure of the international order.

Both leaders underscored the importance of maintaining strong alliances and cooperation in defense and security matters. They highlighted the need for middle powers to stand together in the face of global challenges, ensuring that their voices are heard and their interests protected in an increasingly unstable world.
