Syria Extradites Assad-Era General Amid War Crimes Trials

Lebanese authorities extradited Major General Adel Issa, a former senior officer in Syria's Assad-era military, to Damascus on Wednesday. This marks the first transfer of an Assad-era official by Lebanon since Bashar al-Assad was ousted in December 2024.

The Syrian interior ministry stated that Issa faces charges including intentional homicide, torture leading to death, and crimes aimed at inciting civil war. According to Reuters, Issa was detained on August 8 after visiting the Syrian embassy in Beirut to complete paperwork. Embassy officials alerted Lebanese authorities about his wanted status.

The transfer follows months of pressure from Damascus on Beirut to act against former Assad officers who fled to Lebanon after the government's collapse. Reuters reported that Syrian authorities had provided Lebanese security officials with a list of more than 200 former senior officers sought by Damascus.

Meanwhile, protests erupted in Syria following the death of Mohammad Ghamira, a former White Helmet volunteer who died after allegedly being tortured in police custody. According to The Guardian, Ghamira was arrested over a financial dispute and reportedly beaten while detained, despite warnings about his haemophilia condition.

Public outrage has led to planned protests across Syria. The Syrian interior ministry promised accountability, forming an investigative committee and detaining seven members of the interior ministry for questioning. The Guardian noted that rights groups have documented continued torture in Syrian detention centers post-Assad era.

A Syrian court sentenced Wassim al-Assad, a cousin of ousted ruler Bashar al-Assad, to death after convicting him of crimes during Syria’s nearly 14-year war. The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus found Wassim al-Assad guilty of premeditated murder and torture classified as crimes against humanity and war crimes. This makes him the first member of the al-Assad family to be sentenced in person.

Wassim al-Assad was arrested in June 2025 upon his return from Lebanon, where he faced charges including leading pro-regime paramilitary groups and participating in military operations targeting civilian areas. The court ordered the confiscation of his assets but found him not guilty of drug-trafficking charges due to insufficient evidence.

According to Al Jazeera, a Syrian police officer has been arrested and may be criminally prosecuted after an investigation found that he hit Mohammad Ghamira, who suffered from haemophilia, leading to his death. The investigation revealed that Ghamira had informed internal security personnel about his condition, and his wife twice informed authorities about the potential danger.

The Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab stated that the investigation results showed the ministry’s commitment to reaching the truth and holding accountable those proven to have overstepped. He emphasized that building a state of law begins with accountability and justice for victims.
