Farage Wins Clacton By-Election Amid Controversy

Nigel Farage regained his parliamentary seat in the Clacton by-election on August 13, 2024, defeating satirical candidate Count Binface. The election was triggered after Farage resigned amid an investigation into a £5m gift he accepted from Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based crypto billionaire.

Farage received 22,239 votes (63% of the vote) compared to Binface's 9,455 votes (27%), according to Al Jazeera and The Guardian. The election was boycotted by major parties, leaving Farage with fringe opponents including Count Binface, actor Laurence Fox, and members from the Monster Raving Loony party.

Farage triggered the vote last month when he quit his seat in the hope that it would put to bed questions about his finances and result in a resounding victory over his main political rivals. He said he would let voters judge him in a 'people versus the establishment' contest, as reported by PBS. However, Farage is instead facing opponents like Count Binface, a political satirist posing as a comic space alien with a keen interest in earthly matters.

The election features a record 34 candidates, including Howling Laud Hope of The Official Monster Raving Loony Party and Marcus White from the Everyone is God Party. Given the numbers standing, Clacton residents were presented with a ballot paper around 3 feet long (around 1 meter). Turnout was widely expected to be low as it often is in special elections. In the July 2024 general election, Farage faced eight rivals and garnered 21,225 votes, or 46.2% of the total.

The acting returning officer confirmed a turnout of around 43%, compared to a 58.7% turnout when Farage was first elected in 2024. This is the largest number ever for a Westminster by-election and has caused logistical problems for the vote count, according to The Daily Mail.

Farage's Reform UK party has been beset by financial scandals and declining popularity. According to The Guardian, polls have shown the populist force lagging behind the governing Labour Party in recent weeks. The inquiry will look into allegations Farage was financially supported by George Cottrell, a close friend who is a crypto gambler and convicted fraudster.

Count Binface is created by comedian Jonathan Harvey and has run against four prime ministers over the last decade. He describes himself as an 'intergalactic space warrior' and wears a black bodysuit, silver cape, and metal trash can on his head. His real name is Jon Harvey, a 46-year-old comedian who studied classics at Oxford University.
