Jeffries Meets Kushner Amid Midterm Tensions

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries met privately with President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner recently in New York City, signaling efforts to engage across party lines ahead of the midterm elections. Jeffries, who is positioned to become House Speaker if Democrats regain power, did not mention the private conversation in his statement but criticized the Republican administration's approach. 'To stop the madness, we have repeatedly made clear that an extremist approach will not work and will be met with forceful opposition,' Jeffries said, emphasizing the need for transformational policy change to address the affordability crisis.

Kushner suggested that Jeffries meet with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles as a follow-up. The meeting underscores Republican anxieties about losing their congressional majority and the need to make inroads with the opposing party. If Democrats retake power, the White House can expect an aggressive oversight agenda into what Jeffries has called the 'crooks' in the administration, with the threat of impeachment among the many tools at the party's disposal.

House Speaker Mike Johnson downplayed Kushner's role in the White House. 'I know Jared has interests in lots of other things going on. He's not really directly involved in the admin, at least in the day-to-day in the White House,' Johnson said on Fox News Channel's 'The Sunday Briefing.' The White House and a representative for Kushner did not respond to requests for comment.

Jeffries reiterated his party's stance against Republican governance, stating that Republicans have adopted a my-way-or-the-highway approach that has failed the American people. He emphasized Democrats' commitment to bold change and an affordable America. Despite struggling in recent polls, Johnson expressed confidence in retaining the GOP majority in the House.

Democratic strategist James Carville criticized Jeffries for meeting with Kushner, calling the Trump administration 'a pack of felons.' In a video for Politicon, Carville said, 'We believe one thing above all. These people are a pack of felons and traitors, and you do not meet with them!' He emphasized that Democrats should not engage with those they view as corrupt.

Jeffries responded to the backlash in a social media video, stating that Kushner reached out to him first and that Democrats will 'hold the crooks accountable.' Carville's criticism highlights the internal divisions within the Democratic Party regarding engagement with the Trump administration ahead of the midterms.
