Ruffalo Defends Criticism of Paramount Merger

Actor Mark Ruffalo has strongly defended his criticism of Paramount's proposed $110.9 billion merger with Warner Bros Discovery after the company accused him of invoking antisemitic tropes in his social media posts. According to The Guardian, Ruffalo highlighted Oracle's ties to Israel's military, which is run by Larry Ellison, the father of David Ellison, CEO of Paramount Skydance.

Ruffalo shared a video of Oracle executive vice-chair Safra Catz describing the 'really profoundly scary technology' provided to Israel after the October 7 attack by Hamas in 2023. He accused Larry Ellison of using Oracle to fund his son David's Warner Bros acquisition and warned that these technologies could be used on the public one day.

Paramount responded with a statement calling Ruffalo's language 'troubling' and stating that words like 'genocide' and 'apartheid,' when applied to a corporate transaction, are not just wrong but also cheapen real suffering. The company emphasized that it does not tolerate prejudice of any kind.

Ruffalo clarified his stance in a written statement, asserting that criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, military technology contracts, or executives who supply them is not the same as criticizing Jewish people. He expressed deep love and respect for Jewish people and emphasized that his views come from his political convictions.

Hannah Einbinder, a Jewish actress known for her role in 'Hacks,' defended Ruffalo on social media. She stated that she was grateful he drew connections between the Ellisons' actions and their media takeover. Einbinder argued that criticizing the Ellisons' provision of military technology to Israel is not antisemitic but rather a critique of right-wing oligarchs consolidating power.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta abruptly pulled out of a planned mediation session Monday to seek a resolution to the antitrust lawsuit that has stalled Paramount Skydance’s blockbuster $110.9 billion merger with Warner Bros Discovery. According to The Los Angeles Times, Bonta accused Paramount of leaking and misrepresenting information discussed during a preliminary session Friday, stating that Paramount was 'playing games.' The mediation process had been ordered by the judge in the antitrust case.

Paramount denied the allegations, asserting they were not the source of any leaks. The company expressed hope for good faith discussions to resolve the lawsuit and move forward with their plans. No other talks have been scheduled as of now.
