Gates Warns of Turbulent AI Transition

He also suggested creating a new global organization for AI, akin to international bodies overseeing nuclear weapons and aviation.

Gates emphasized that responding to AI's challenges should be the world's top priority, as reported by CNBC. His warning comes in stark contrast to his 2023 essay where he expressed optimism about managing AI risks. According to The Guardian, Gates now believes the pace of change will be far quicker than previous technological shifts, affecting industries over a decade rather than generations.

Gates is 'especially worried' about young people entering the workforce amid fewer job openings. He noted that waiting until they are displaced or underemployed would be too late. Despite his concerns, Gates acknowledged AI's potential to tackle global challenges like climate change and disease eradication.

According to CBS News, Gates warned that AI is changing the economy much faster than previous technological revolutions, advancing at what he called a 'mind-blowing rate.' He noted that AI will take on work in law, customer service, medicine, software, and manufacturing over the course of a decade.
