SpaceX to Invest $100B in Louisiana Starship Rocket Complex

SpaceX announced plans to invest up to $100 billion in building a massive Starship rocket complex in Louisiana. The facility, named Starbase Louisiana, will be located on a sprawling 125,000-acre site along the Gulf coast of Vermilion Parish.

The new spaceport aims to replicate and expand upon SpaceX's existing Starbase facility in southern Texas. According to Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president and chief operating officer, the Louisiana site will be a self-sustaining spaceport featuring propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping capabilities, vehicle processing facilities, an airport, and residential housing for employees.

The announcement was made during an event attended by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and other senior state officials. Landry called the deal a historic moment for the state, emphasizing that it will bring thousands of jobs to local communities and contribute significantly to coastal restoration efforts in partnership with the state government. He likened the impact of the new launch site to the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, stating 'Today is nothing short of a transformational moment.' Elon Musk appeared alongside Landry in a promotional video played before the governor's speech.

SpaceX's investment follows its previous launch sites in Cape Canaveral, Florida; Vandenberg Space Force Base in California; and Starbase Texas. The new Louisiana facility is expected to support thousands of Starship launches annually, furthering Elon Musk's ambitions for expanding the Starlink satellite network, launching orbital data centers, and eventually colonizing Mars.

The location provides key advantages including access to abundant natural gas and the ability to launch to a wide range of trajectories. Construction is expected to begin in 2027 with the first launch targeted for as early as 2029. State lawmakers had approved sizable tax incentives for the project.

However, environmental advocates have expressed concerns about potential impacts on Louisiana's fragile coastline. Anne Rolfes, director of the environmental advocacy group Louisiana Bucket Brigade, called for a transparent public process to consider the project's implications. Shotwell responded that SpaceX plans to keep much of the site undeveloped and will help with restoration and protection efforts, including working to reverse land loss from erosion.

SpaceX stock rose about 2% to close at $137.95 following the announcement, according to CNBC. The facility is expected to bring 3,000 new jobs in the next 10 years and create approximately 8,100 indirect new jobs, all with an average annual salary of $92,600.

The site will include five launch complexes, each with two launch pads and a propellant farm. SpaceX also said it would work on historic coastal restoration efforts to bring the marsh back and ensure storm protection for wetlands around its new facility.
