Germany Accuses Russia of Leipzig Airport Drone Attack

Germany has formally accused Russia of orchestrating an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4. The explosive-laden drone was discovered near a Ukrainian cargo plane and subsequently defused.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the device exhibited characteristics consistent with other Russian hybrid operations and military actions in Ukraine. The German government announced several retaliatory measures, including the closure of Russia's consulate general in Bonn effective September 18 and the termination of its agreement with the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.

Germany will also propose adding more Russians to European Union sanctions lists and increasing pressure on the so-called 'shadow fleet'—tankers suspected of shipping Russian oil in violation of international sanctions. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that the attack fits into a broader pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe.

The German Foreign Ministry summoned Russia's ambassador to discuss the incident, and European allies have expressed solidarity with Germany. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that NATO stands in full solidarity with Germany after the Russian hybrid attack.

Russia has denied any involvement in the attempted drone attack, with President Vladimir Putin suggesting that Germany had fabricated evidence to distract from domestic issues. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called the claims a 'far-fetched and contrived pretext' for Berlin to escalate tensions. Despite Russia's denials, European allies have rallied around Germany, condemning Russia's actions and expressing support for further sanctions.

The German government has also experienced other incidents of sabotage, including an attempted disruption of a major electricity grid near Bergheim on Tuesday evening. Police are investigating the incident as premeditated vandalism, though the power supply was not affected. Additionally, a grenade exploded outside a Turkish jewellery shop near Augsburg's train station early Wednesday morning, injuring two Ukrainian teenagers with minor wounds.

The European Union is weighing how best to respond to the attempted drone attack but struggles to find new ways to meet the challenge without resorting to military means. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the incident as having 'all the hallmarks of state-sponsored terrorism.' French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that France summoned Russia’s envoy to 'protest strongly' and wants to impose sanctions on more of the Kremlin’s shadow fleet ships.

In a retaliatory measure, Russia announced it would close German cultural centers in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Germany's actions signified the end of their cultural presence in Russia. President Putin accused Berlin of fabricating evidence to distract from domestic issues.

European countries continue to face hybrid attacks by Russia, marked by cyberwarfare, disinformation, and conventional military threats. Each side accuses the other of state terrorism. The tension has grown into a major foreign and defense policy challenge for European Union countries.
