UK Jets Intercept Russian Plane Near Carrier

UK fighter jets intercepted a Russian maritime patrol aircraft near HMS Prince of Wales in the Norwegian Sea after it repeatedly approached 'unnecessarily close' to the British carrier strike group, according to defense officials. The incident occurred on July 2 during NATO air defense operations led by the Royal Navy carrier.

The Defense Ministry described the approaches as 'unsafe and unprofessional,' noting that British forces attempted to contact the Russian aircraft but received no response. Two F-35 fighter jets escorted the Russian plane away from the carrier, per Politico.

Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis visited HMS Prince of Wales over the weekend following the incident. He emphasized NATO's enhanced presence in the strategically important region, stating that 'the threat from Russia exists in every domain.' The deployment marks the first time F-35 jets have conducted NATO air defense operations from a European aircraft carrier.

The UK's Carrier Strike Group, which includes destroyers and helicopters, is deployed near Iceland with about 1,500 British service members aboard. This mission comes amid heightened tensions with Russia and increased 'hybrid war' tactics in the region. Earlier incidents included Russian jets intercepting British surveillance aircraft over the Black Sea and a frigate firing warning shots at a yacht crewed by a retired couple in the English Channel.

The incident coincides with NATO members set to pledge €70 billion in military assistance to Ukraine for 2026, as reported by Reuters. The Russian activity comes ahead of a major NATO summit of world leaders in Ankara.
